We are eternally grateful to Dr. Silber for enabling us, with the help of G-d, to build a family.
Thirteen years ago, I was told that a bone marrow transplant was my only hope for a cure from a life threatening blood disease. I was devastated to hear that I wouldn’t be able to conceive following the high dose chemotherapy. I froze eggs and had my right ovary removed and cryopreserved in 2005 prior to my transplant. Thank G-d I survived the transplant and was married in 2010. Following the transplant I became menopausal and we, under the guidance of New York’s “top reproductive endocrinologists”, spent a lot of money and effort trying to conceive using the eggs we had frozen. None of the eggs survived the thaw. A friend of ours suggested we fly to St. Louis to meet world renowned Dr. Sherman Silber. And that’s how our lives were forever changed.
As soon as we checked in to the hospital for some testing, we were told by an attendant, “start decorating your child’s room in a neutral color because whoever comes here to see Dr. Silber has a baby!” We laughed in disbelief. Our meeting with Dr. Silber was exciting and hopeful. He explained how he planned to reimplant a portion of my ovarian tissue into my menopausal ovary. He was confident, warm, and clearly the expert in the field of oncofertility. We walked out with new hopes for our future.
Following the surgery, I resumed menses 6 months postop and naturally conceived 3 months later. We had a beautiful and healthy baby boy thank G-d. We were elated that our dreams became a reality and our lives were changed with a new blessing and the deepest happiness. Seven months postpartum we were so excited to find out we were pregnant again! We had a baby girl 16 months after the birth of our son! And miraculously we had another baby girl 20 months after our second child was born. Dr. Silber’s lovely office staff remains in contact with me each month as I have my labs drawn to monitor the function of my ovary.
Six years after my ovarian transplant I continue to ovulate and have regular cycles. Dr. Silber predicts the tissue will function for a few more years. We are so deeply grateful to Dr. Silber for giving us, with G-d’s help, the greatest gift in the world – a beautiful family. His expert microsurgery skills, brilliance, and genuine concern and care for us has been so comforting and we know we are in the best hands. I urge anyone considering ovarian transplant to see Dr. Silber so your dreams of having a family can come true too.
Infertile patients cannot afford to wait for treatment while their eggs get older.
Dr. Sherman Silber, Infertility Center of St. Louis, is offering video consultations for patients who need to plan now for their treatment while stay-at-home orders are in place. He is talking to and evaluating patients in their home to comply with social distancing measures.
Dr. Silber is discovering that patients actually prefer this method of telemedicine consultation over the conventional office visit. Patients have conveyed that “it is so much more convenient and less stressful” to have a telemedicine personal consultation than to take a day off from work to travel to the doctor’s office and sit with other nervous patients in the waiting room.
The COVID-19 pandemic is thus changing much of the way we will do things in the future, and for the better. “Our patients are surprisingly much happier with this approach. Of course, at some point we need to perform hands on treatment. But with this new manner of seeing patients, we can come to the right diagnosis and treatment plan for most patients more efficiently, quickly, and painlessly, with no loss of personal one-on-one communication.” This is a very welcome new era of telemedicine that has been forced on us by the current difficult times.
