Why is Birth Control Used at the Beginning of IVF?

Video transcript below:

Well this is a great question. Patients are always a little confused when I say “Well we’re going to do IVF and we’ll get you pregnant, and first you have to go on birth control pills.” Well the reason is that the ovary will normally have what we call non-ovulated mid-size non-atretic follicles. And a simple way to put that is ‘old eggs that haven’t really developed.’ So if you stimulate to get some eggs so that you can retrieve for IVF, you’re going to get some bad quality old eggs. So the birth control pill gets you down to baseline so that when we stimulate you – and stimulate you mildly – the only thing we’re really going to get are the good eggs.
