Fertility can be readily restored, by thawing the frozen ovarian tissue and transplanting it back into the patient. It is not a difficult procedure for the doctor or for the patient. The tissue that was frozen is the outer membrane of the ovary, which is where all the eggs are located. It is placed back in the woman’s other non preserved ovary with very simple stitching. This tissue then comes to life and the ovary begins to function as though it had never been removed and frozen. The woman conceives naturally without any need for IVF.
The reason this technique works so robustly is that all the woman’s eggs are located not within the ovary, but on the outside capsule. So we are not really freezing and thawing the ovary. we are just freezing a thin piece of ovary tissue very much like a simple skin graft. Ovary transplantation therefore is an outpatient procedure that involves minimum pain, similar to the original ovary freeze.
